Thematic Network





Medcoastland is a thematic network project funded by the European Commission (EC), within the 5th framework program for the international cooperation with Mediterranean countries (INCO-MED), aiming at the Mediterranean coordination and dissemination of land conservation management to combat land degradation for the sustainable use of natural resources in the Mediterranean coastal zones.

Overall objective
The overall objective of MEDCOASTLAND is to contribute to sustainable development, planning and management of natural resources in Mediterranean coastal areas, with particular regard to Land and Soil Degradation and Conservation Management.




Specific objectives
  • Implementing an effective co-ordination and dissemination of research, studies and projects dealing with land degradation and soil conservation in Mediterranean countries.
  • Providing research reviews, dissemination of research results, communication among key players, public access to relevant information, and indications and guidelines to implement good management practices.
  • Identifying major gaps in information and knowledge-base to reach a proper regional understanding of sustainable land management.
  • Formulating an eco-system based assistance methodology to land users.
  • Developing an income-product generating approach in soil conservation management.
  • Suggesting more adequate planning policies in coastal areas.


Structure
The project breaks down into seven Work Packages (WP).

The project will ensure that: · previous and current researches, EU-funded projects, and experiences of all partners are fully integrated and incorporated · the most ample participation of the Southern Mediterranean countries will be achieved · integrators, guidelines or any planning framework arising from the discussion within the Network will be fully discussed and formulated with all involved key players and stakeholders.




Activities
    Retrieval and research review of previous studies and projects.

  • A series of five workshops on:

    • Eco-system based assessment of soil degradation to facilitate land users and land owners prompt action (Adana, Turkey, June 2003)
    • Income-product generating land conservation management (Marrakech, Morocco, February 2004)
    • Participatory land conservation management (Alexandria, Egypt, October 2004)
    • Guidelines to support policy making (Beirut, Lebanon, 23-28 May 2005)
    • Formulation of a Draft Agreement for exchanging and sharing information and data (Marsa, Malta, February 2006)

  • A WEB-FORUM and a permanent VIRTUAL CAMPUS
  • Six monthly electronic newsletter
  • Preparation of 3 thematic and 1 multi-thematic Video-CD Rom
  • One Euro-Mediterranean Conference on natural landscape and soil conservation management (Bari, Italy, June 2006).



Main Targets
  • Establish Mediterranean-wide permanent communication structure between researchers, decision makers, land users and non-profit organisation combating land degradation in the Southern Mediterranean
  • Link research activities to the needs and concerns arising from Mediterranean coastal areas
  • Provide rational extraction of knowledge from research, and allow access to easy-to use information
  • Provide a framework to assist regional planning and EU-funding in Mediterranean coastal areas
